The RØDE Podcaster Microphone

The magic bits inside the mic can do this better than the majority of on-board computer sound boards By David Hague

An often overlooked aspect of video is the voice over dialogue. Of course this needs a good mic...

While there are many, many 'broadcast' mics available to perform this, for many hobbyists and professionals  not creating actual broadcast video, these are overkill and let's face it, probably too expensive.

This is where the RØDE Podcaster Mic comes into its own.

The RØDE Podcaster is a dynamic, end-address USB microphone that combines broadcast quality audio with the simplicity of USB connectivity, allowing recording direct to a computer without the need for an additional digital interface.

For the techies, it provides 18 bit resolution and 48kHz sampling and processes all of the analogue to digital conversion internally. Why would you do this? Simply as the magic bits inside the mic can do this better than the majority of on-board computer sound boards.

Feature wise, there is an external headphone jack with zero latency, meaning there is no annoying echo or delay when recording, so you hear it exactly. An internal pop filter is also incorporated to reduce external noise that can overload the mic and cause distortion. An LED displays the current microphone status. A USB cable is supplied.

The Podcaster is fully compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems, and even some forms of LINUX.

It comes supplied with an RM2 ring mount, but I added it to a standard desk mount. If yours has the smaller thread size, an adaptor thread is supplied. Personally I would pay a little more if a deskstand was included in the package as against being an optional accessory.

The Podcaster is built like a tank (and like most RØDE products is made right here in Australia in Alexandria in Sydney) and is covered by the RØDE 10 year warranty.

The RRP is $345, but we have seen the Podcaster around the traps for $216 (VideoPro in Brisbane) which is a bargain price for this quality.
